Young man charged over drugs find

Mar 22 2013

A 21-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the discovery of cocaine and pills which may contain a potentially lethal substance.

The man was charged under the Misuse of Drugs Act after "dealer quantities" of cocaine and pills were found by police at an address in Gardiner Road, Prestonpans, near Edinburgh.

Police say they seized around 1,700 pink tablets which have a cherry symbol on one side and sent them for analysis to check whether they contain a "dangerous" substance known as AMT or 5-IT.

A spokesman for the police said: "Officers are awaiting analysis on these items but it is believed they contain the dangerous substances known as AMT or 5-IT. Police are warning the public of the risks associated with these tablets and anyone who has consumed them and begins to feel unwell is urged to seek immediate medical attention."

The man is scheduled to appear at Haddington Sheriff Court on Monday March 25.

On Tuesday Strathclyde Police reissued a warning about the potential danger of new substances after the death of a 35-year-old man on Sunday in Hamilton in South Lanarkshire.

Seven people were treated in hospital last week after taking "Rockstar", red or yellow tablets being sold as ecstasy, circulating in the Lanarkshire area.

But the exact contents of the pills are unknown and could contain different substances, officers said.

Last year the force warned people not to take tablets labelled AMT or 5-IT which are said to be connected with a number of deaths in Europe.
