Travel company plans Miami move

Feb 4 2013

Scottish travel company Skyscanner has announced plans to open an office in Miami to compete in the American market.

The flight price comparison website, which is available in 40 countries and in 30 languages, said it saw an 84% increase in traffic last year.

The Edinburgh-based firm has now revealed plans to expand, recruiting another 100 staff over the next year.

Skyscanner said it trebled the number of visitors to the site from Asia-Pacific in 2012 following the opening of offices in Singapore and Beijing, with Asia now representing 18% of overall traffic. It will set up in Miami, Florida, later this year as part of a goal to be the top travel search company.

Gareth Williams, chief executive and co-founder, said: "We plan to match our success in Europe and Asia across the Americas. We are already experiencing rapid growth in North and South America led by growth of our mobile apps and the time is right to establish our Americas base.

"It's our ambition at Skyscanner to be the number one in travel search globally and we're confident that our Miami office will play a big part in achieving that goal."

Skyscanner now employs around 180 staff from 35 nationalities across its four offices. The company has also announced record growth in 2012, with monthly visits to the site coming in at more than 30 million.

It said travel bookings were generated for airline partners in excess of £2.3 billion, with revenue increasing by 65% to £33.5 million for the year ended December 31 2012.

Shane Corstorphine, Skyscanner's chief financial officer, said: "Our significant growth over the past year really underlines the strength of the Skyscanner business model and brand across the 40 countries we operate in.

"We've continued to build on our existing strengths and success across Europe to consolidate our position as the number one travel search site. We've also seen quite exceptional growth across Asia, following the opening of our offices in Singapore and, more recently, in Beijing."
