Torch sets off from BP North Sea HQ

Jun 12 2012

The Olympic Flame has set off on the 25th day of its relay around the UK.

The celebrations got under way at BP's North Sea headquarters in Dyce, Aberdeen, where a special outdoor reception was held with live music and a festival atmosphere.

Lindsay Rennie, 46, from Arbroath, carried the flame along Wellheads Drive. Hundreds of people lined up to cheer him on despite the early start.

Mr Rennie, a well services supervisor at BP North Sea, has swum across the River Tay on three separate occasions, raising more than £7,000 for charity.

More than 100 torchbearers will carry the flame on its 133-mile route from Aberdeen to Dundee.

The torch will visit Scone Palace, near Perth, where it will be carried by 16-year-old Louise Fox, a keen swimmer from Dundee.

Later it will be taken to the Desperate Dan statue in Dundee, which was put up in celebration of the famous character from The Dandy comic.

The flame will also be carried by another 16-year-old swimmer, Mark Szaranek from Fife. He was selected to represent Great Britain at the 2011 European Olympic Youth Games and hopes one day to represent Team GB at the Olympics.

The torch will also pass through Stonehaven, Marykirk, Hillside, Montrose, Brechin, Forfar, Meigle, Coupar Angus, Woodside, Burrelton, Balbeggie, Scone, Perth, Abernethy, Newburgh, Cupar, Dairsie, Guardbridge, Leuchars and Dundee.

The day will finish with an evening celebration in Baxter Park in Dundee, with music from Scottish singer Emeli Sande. There will also be entertainment from local acts staged by Dundee City Council. Towards the end of the two-hour show, the last torchbearer of the day will light a celebration cauldron on stage.
