Teenager hurt in sledging accident

A teenager fell 150ft down a steep embankment in a sledging accident and escaped with just a broken leg. The 16-year-old was playing in the snow on Blackford Hill, in Edinburgh, when his sledge ran out of control. A spokeswoman for Lothian & Borders Fire and Rescue said crews were unable to access the hill in their fire engines and had to attend to the incident on foot. The teenager was brought down using line rescue equipment at about 2.20pm and taken by ambulance to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with a broken left leg. Mountain rescue crews were also en-route to an incident on Glencoe, in the Highlands, at about 2pm on Saturday. The Lecht ski centre in Strathdon, Aberdeenshire, was closed due to heavy snow on the access roads. A planned World Snow Day event at the Glenshee Ski Centre, Perth & Kinross, on Sunday has been cancelled. The south access to the centre from Blairgowrie was closed due to heavy snow on Saturday morning, but reopened later in the day. Roads to Glencoe, Nevis Range and Cairngorm were open, although many ski-lifts were suspended due to poor conditions.
