Rare dog abandoned on roadside

Feb 10 2012

A "lovely" dog has been found abandoned at the roadside weighing half her recommended weight.

The white German shepherd was found in North Street, Bo'ness on Wednesday with a womb infection and sores on her body.

A Scottish SPCA warden found the dog, who has been named Mia, and took her to a vet for treatment.

Inspector Leanne McPake said: "Mia was in an awful state when she was found. She is extremely thin and weighs just 16kg, when a dog of her breed and age should be around 30kg.

"She is also suffering from an infection of her womb which would have been causing her a great deal of discomfort.

"Mia has pressure wounds on her pelvis which may be a result of lying on hard ground for a prolonged period of time and these injuries would certainly have been really painful."

The charity said white German shepherds are rare and they hope someone will be able to identify the dog.

Anyone found guilty of allowing or causing suffering to an animal can be fined and banned from keeping them for a fixed period or life.

Ms McPake added: "The person responsible for Mia clearly hasn't provided her with even the most basic care she needs. Her claws were very long, indicating she hasn't been outside for some time and her teeth are in terrible condition.

"Despite the suffering she has been through, Mia is such a lovely dog. She will be provided with the treatment she needs to help her make a full recovery and then we'll be looking to find her a loving new home."
