New Year death crash driver traced

Jan 4 2013

Police have traced a man they believe is the driver of a car which crashed into a tree, killing a passenger.

Stefan Sakatiuk, 34, from Fauldhouse, West Lothian, died when the silver Vauxhall Signum he was travelling in left the B7015 Sheephousehill Road and hit a tree on New Year's Day.

The driver, who has not been named, left the scene of the crash which happened at around 7.45pm, 50m east of the Sheephousehill Road junction with Breichwater Place.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Police said: "We've traced the person we believe to be the driver. He's helping police with inquiries."

Mr Sakatiuk's father and two brothers earlier appealed for the driver to "do the right thing" and hand himself in to police.

"It is a terrible shock to the whole family. Stefan was a much loved son and brother, who especially loved his mum," they said in a statement.

"We would like to be left alone to grieve and hope the driver does the right thing and hands himself in.

"Stefan will be dearly missed and we cannot believe that this has happened."
