Funeral for balloon crash victim

Mar 14 2013

The funeral of a woman killed in the Egyptian hot air balloon disaster is to be held on Thursday.

Yvonne Rennie, 48, from Perth, was on holiday with her husband Michael when they were caught up in the horror crash in Luxor.

Nineteen people died when the balloon plunged to the ground last month.

Mr Rennie, one of just two survivors, will lead the mourning at a service at Perth Crematorium. The construction services worker, 49, is thought to have escaped death by leaping from the basket.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, he described his wife as his "rock, friend, shoulder to cry on."

London-based Joe Bampton and his Hungarian-born partner Suzanna Gyetvai also died when the balloon exploded into flames before crashing into sugar cane fields on February 26.

The company operating the flight, Sky Cruise, was also involved in a balloon crash into the Nile in October 2011.

Mr Rennie received treatment for minor injuries at Luxor international hospital before returning to Scotland. It is understood he and Mrs Rennie had been married for around five years.

The hospital administrator joined the radiology department of Perth Royal Infirmary as an appointments officer in June 2006 having previously worked at Ninewells Hospital.

Colleagues at NHS Tayside said she was a much-loved member of staff who enjoyed her job and would be greatly missed.
