Afghan return soldiers on parade

About 200 soldiers have marched through the streets of Dundee to mark their return home after a six-month tour of Afghanistan. The 19th Regiment Royal Artillery (The Highland Gunners) completed the first of two homecoming parades in Dundee. The second will take place on Thursday in Inverness where the regiment received Freedom of the City in 1999. Marching soldiers were accompanied by music from the regiment's pipes and drums as they made their way through the city centre. Their tour came to an end last month and they returned to their permanent base at Bhurtpore barracks in Tidworth Camp in Wiltshire. Story continues ADVERTISEMENT They were deployed as part of 12 Mechanized Brigade and took on various duties across Helmand province, including providing support for five battlegroups and operating on foot and from protected mobility vehicles such as Jackals. While on tour, they were also involved in the mentoring and monitoring of the Afghanistan National Police (ANP) and Afghan National Army (ANA). The regiment is the local artillery unit of the Highlands and traditionally recruits from the Highlands, Grampian, Tayside, Fife, Central and Argyll.
