FLEET Star have made their first signing of the season by bringing in Barry Curtis from Creetown. Gaffer Barry Pickthall had tried to snare the left sided player a year ago and was delighted to finally get his man. He said: “I spoke to him last year and he opted to go to Creetown, but I spoke to him again at the end of the season and he decided he wanted to come as he has a few pals here. He wants to nail down a first team position and the rest is up to him. “He’s a left back or left midfield and I don’t think you can ever have too many left sided players in your squad. They’re hard to come by so he’s a bonus to our squad.” However, while Pickthall was happy with that piece of business, he was less impressed with the departure of Jordan Page. The midfielder had been linked with a move to Creetown before committing to Fleet Star - only to sign for Crichton last week. Pickthall said: “I’m a bit miffed but I wish him the best of luck. He said the travelling was a big issue as he lives in Dumfries and it was five minutes to training. “It’s a big loss, but no player is bigger than the team. We just need to move on and it’s obviously a position we need to fill. “I think deep down, he’s not known what he wanted to do since the season finished. He was going to Creetown, staying with us then after speaking to Jim Thomson he’s decided to go to Crichton. “I wish him the best of luck but I can’t hide the fact we’re disappointed.” Star have fixed up a friendly against Ayrshire side Annbank on July 23. Before then, pre-season training continues every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday in Gatehouse. And Pickthall is inviting any player interested in trying their luck with the Garries Park side to head along for training to see if they have what it takes to cut it in the South of Scotland League. Anyone interested can turn up at training or contact him on 07732654932. |
