THE weather was again the winner in South football circles on Saturday with only one of the scheduled matches managing to avoid postponement due to frozen pitches following a very hard overnight frost on Friday night.
Four of the matches were cancelled on Saturday morning, but the two teams were at Garries Park, Gatehouse, before referee Derek Stokes adjudged that the pitch was in a dangerous state and the match between Fleet Star and neighbours St Cuthbert Wanderers was to be cancelled.
This now means that 69 matches have now been lost so far this season against 66 lost at the same time last season.
Heston Rovers again lost out which means that they have not played a competitive match since November 7 last year, with Fleet Star and Stranraer having played only twice during this period.
The postponed League Cup semi-final between Stranraer and Newton Stewart will now take place on the evening of Wednesday, February 3, at Stair Park with a 7.30pm kick-off.
WIGTOWN and BLADNOCH 4 CREETOWN 3
The only match to beat the weather took place at Trammondford Park where Wigtown and Bladnoch beat Creetown by the odd goal in seven to take the three points.
With only three minutes left to play, striker Allan Murdoch scored a superb winner from 30 yards out with a dipping effort which he sent over the outstretched arms of keeper Martin Roddie to complete his hat-trick.
The game was goalless for 42 minutes with chances falling at both ends, but striker Robert Jamieson broke the deadlock when he sidefooted a Murdoch pass into the net from 10 yards out through the legs of the keeper.
Two minutes later the home side doubled their lead when Jamieson headed the ball onwards to Murdoch who ran in on goal to fire into the top right hand corner of the net from 20 yards.
Nineteen minutes into the second half Creetown came to life when Ryan McKie broke down the left to cross the ball to the back post where he found the head of Fraser Henderson to put the visitors right back into the match.
Three minutes later though, the home side restored their two goal advantage when Murdoch broke away to round the keeper and slide the ball into an empty net.
In the thirty-fourth minute Creetown scored again, Henderson scoring from the penalty spot after substitute Liam Muir had been pulled down.
With only five minutes left, Ryan McKie took a corner kick which left keeper Parlane stranded. The ball eventually found its way back out to McKie who found an acute angle from 20 yards out to put the sides level.
Creetown’s luck ran out though with Murdoch striking his late winner and although the visitors had battled well, there was no reward for them with Wigtown taking the three points to move up the table into third place.
