Shark in the Solway?

May 15 2008

by Colin Paterson, Galloway News

IS there a shark in the Solway Firth?

One local fisherman and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) certainly think there is something in the water.

James Morris discovered more than he bargained for when he checked his fishing nets on Tuesday at Portling.

A bass was found with a clean chunk of its body taken away with Mr Morris fearing a shark had struck.

He reported his concerns to SEPA who confirmed the bite had probably been inflicted by a Porbeagle shark.

A spokesperson for SEPA told the ‘News’: “We were contacted by a member of the public about a fish he had caught off the coast of Portling.

“The bass has a large bite out of it, which the caller was concerned looked like a shark bite.

“One of our officers went to investigate and from the bite characteristics we agree that it looks as though a shark was involved, most likely a Porbeagle shark.

“SEPA is not responsible for such health and safety concerns, however there are no known reports of Porbeagle sharks attacking people.

“Our officer has passed a report on to the coastguard.”

Porbeagle sharks are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN World Conservation Union red list of threatened species.

They can be found in coastal waters and live in cold water, usually between 5°C and 10°C in temperature.
