Visible Bra Straps Revealed as Summer Fashion Crime

VBS the new VPL for Summer 2007

Muffin tops, visible panty lines (VPL) and thong flashes are no longer top of the offence list for the fashion police.

Research released today reveals that red-faced women across the UK admit to being most guilty of the Visible Bra Strap (VBS) when it comes to crimes against fashion.

Visible Bra Strap

The survey, commissioned by Wonderbra, found that the other summer-gaffs that Scottish women admit to include sporting chipped nail varnish, gusset showing skirts and revealing their thongs.

Women are most critical when it comes to VBS - 57 per cent of women and 42 per cent of men labelled the look as unattractive, with a third of women saying it ³looked cheap².

With predictions of record-breaking temperatures this summer, the number of women wearing skimpy, bra-revealing clothes is set to soar and the female population is on course for months of fair weather fashion dilemmas. Nearly a third (29 per cent) of frustrated Scottish women admit to supplementing their bra with a bikini, whilst 23 per cent say they go bra-less and 21 per cent say they both tuck their bra straps into their tops or adapt an existing bra (cutting or pinning straps) in an effort to keep them hidden.

When it comes to which garments cause the most grief for Scottish women, shoestring tops (66 per cent), plunging necklines (62 per cent), halter-necks (53 per cent), and off the shoulder tops (45 per cent) were all cited as the biggest culprits for causing VBS.

Tracy Hayward, Marketing Manager, Wonderbra said, ³100 years after the launch of the bra it¹s amazing to think women are still unable to find the right fit for their clothes.  Fashion has evolved to bring us all these fabulously varied styles and with the new Multiplunge, the bra has finally come of age too. Multiplunge can be worn in 100 different ways, so no matter what you¹re wearing on top, VBS can finally be banished forever².

As a nation of fashion spies, 71 per cent of Scots have spotted VBS on other people. Knicker-showing skirts were seen by 70 per cent of the population while more than half (56 per cent) have spotted people with chipped nail varnish.

And it is the street that tops the list of places where the VBS crime is committed with 90 per cent of Scots noticing it out and about, with nightclubs being the scene of the second most sightings (44 per cent) followed by bars and restaurants (41 per cent).

To help women across the nation avoid VBS this summer, Wonderbra will be visiting cities across the country with its ³Strap Squad², making the first stop in Edinburgh this Saturday (12th May). The Strap Squad will be showing off Wonderbra¹s revolutionary Multiplunge bra, which can be fastened in 100 different ways, giving the nation¹s women the perfect Œsupport¹ (and cleavage) over the summer season and eradicating the curse of VBS.
